USPC Eventing Committee Statement on Safety

As stated at the USPC Annual Meeting in 2008, the USPC Eventing Committee is committed to making sure that USPC is proactive about the safety concerns being reviewed by our National and International organizations, in the sport of Eventing.

As most of us are aware, there have been serious injuries and deaths in recognized competitions, primarily but not limited to the Preliminary level and up. Keeping this in mind, the USPC Eventing Committee intends to align the safety concerns for our young people with the steps being taken by National and International organizations to try and improve the safety of rider at all levels.

Currently, stricter qualifying rules have been put into place for moving-up in our sport and further rider qualification/licensing is being considered for all levels of riders in National and International Eventing. As an education body for young people and in order to keep their safety of prime importance, the USPC Eventing Committee will be re-evaluating its current qualification system.

USEF Rule Change:

Effective Immediately

EV113 Dress
.4 SPURS. Spurs may be worn at any time. Spurs are required in the dressage test at the Intermediate and Advanced levels. Spurs capable of wounding a horse are forbidden. Spurs must be of smooth metal. If there is a shank it must not be longer than 3.5 cm (1 3/8 inches) and must point only towards the rear. Rowels are not permitted except as in 5 (c) (below). If the shank is curved, the spurs must be worn only with the shank directed downwards. Metal or plastic spurs with round hard plastic or metal knobs are allowed ("Impuls" spur). "Dummy spurs" with no shank and swan neck spurs are allowed.

Success for Pony Club Riders at North American Junior Young Rider West Coast Championship in Eventing

A team of young California riders recently captured first place the new North American Young Rider CCI* Team Championship (West coast NAYRC) held in Temecula California November 1-4. The three riders on the winning team also happen to be active pony club members; Fiona Graham (HA Portola Valley PC); Max McManamy (C-3 Black Oaks PC) and Allegra Aiuto (C-2 Bay Hill PC). Kirstin Hill (C-3 Portola Valley PC) was an invaluable groom.

The USEA Area VI Eventing team, representing the whole of California, (Max McManamy/Beacon Hill, Fiona Graham/Good Barter and Allegra Aiuto/Harley) scored 1,232.0 points to win the title. The Areas VI/VII/X team (Kelsey Kristosik/Smoke Alarm, Erin McElhone/Parkiki Star and John Michael Durr/Phoenix Secret) finished second, coring 1,296.8.

The team was presented with the USEA Linda Tellington-Jones Perpetual Trophy donated by Tom Angle and Jeffray Ryding. Coolers, USEF keeper trophies and ribbons were presented to the first and second place teams.

The Junior/Young Rider National (NJYRTC) CCI* Team Championship was an Eventing only competition. The team competition was run as a long-format CCI* with steeplechase in which the riders complete two phases of roads and tracks, and complete a steeplechase prior to starting out cross-country. "It was really fun-a blast," said McManamy, 15, of riding the three minute steeplechase phase for the first time. The championships were open to all riders between the ages of 14-21 and horses qualified to participate in a CCI*.

USEA Area VI Young Riders' Program is dedicated to the development of young riders in the sport of Eventing. The program also provides an educational ladder of learning, offering a series of events leading up to this Championship. Just like USPC, the Young Rider program promotes teamwork, as all competitions are team competitions, much like the Olympic Games where members learn the importance of cooperation and teamwork. "Pony Club rallies and ratings are excellent preparation for this kind of event as it required teamwork and perfect turn-out," commented Fiona Graham whose horse, Good Barter, had recovered from colic surgery back in April.
