USEA Outreach Program

Goals

- To promote a better working relationship with the USPC and USEA by utilizing programs already available within both organizations.

- To create a more universal standard of teaching on the eventing side of Pony Club.

- To help keep upper level Pony Clubbers active by providing a link to the Young Rider programs and the Instructor Certification programs.

- To establish a younger generation of riders and instructors in the USEA.

How/Costs

- Sara and Eric will offer one reduced rate clinic per region per year. The cost will be divided as follows:

- Sara and Eric's reduced rate for a one to two day clinic is $500 per instructor.

- Each region will also be responsible for all of Sara and Eric's travel and accomdation costs.

- Each clinic can last for one or two days on any phase, or phases, which that specific area wishes to focus on.

- By offering a ground school on any subject that the kids of that region wish to talk about. (Anything from preparing for a three day event, to job opportunities and sponsorship ideas in the event world.)

- By providing information on Young Riders and the ICP at each clinic.

- By having a feedback session on what people want to see from different USEA and USPC programs, and discussions on how they could be more effective. (Usually done at lunch or dinner)

- By encouraging older Pony Clubbers and instructors to come and audit the clinics to find out more about the ICP.

Where?

- Anywhere in the USA

Who?

- Eric Dierks and Sara Kozumplik-Dierks will be dividing up the clinics this year.

- If there are a lot of people in one area and schedule permits they will both come.

- They are both ICP level 3 coaches, achieved A rating in pony club, and compete at the four star level in eventing.

NEW EVENTING GRAND PRIX AWARD 2009

Announcement to all Regions and Clubs and Members

WIN A TRIP TO IRELAND 2009!

General

The USPC Eventing Committee has just announced approval of the Eventing Grand Prix Award. USPC Preliminary Eventing riders from around the USA can win an all-expense paid trip to Ireland leaving Monday August 3, and returning Friday August 14, 2009 by being the first placed team at the USPC Eastern Championships 2009 to be held in Lexington, Virginia, Thursday July 23 - Saturday July 25.

In the true competitive spirit of Pony Club, this is a team award. One five-member team, consisting of 4 riders and one stable manager, are welcome to enter. The 5 winning team members will be announced at the awards ceremony at Championships. If a rider is unable to participate, the next highest scoring competitor on the second place team will be eligible, and so on. If the stable manager is unable to participate, the stable manager from the second placed team will be the alternate and so on.  It should be noted that although the Preliminary Division at Eastern Championships is a recognized USEA "closed" event, the scores may be used to qualify for moving-up, competing in a One Star event and/or the American Eventing Championships. No leader board or Horse of the Year points can be earned.

The future plan for this prize would be to present it at the awards ceremony at Eastern Championships each year, including Festival Years, to the team of competitors that achieve the winning score. A two year trial period has been approved by the Board of Governors. This award also depends on securing sponsorship, which is already in place for 2009.

Any current USPC C-3 and up member who is in good standing, recommended by their RS and meets the requirements, is eligible to compete at Championships at the Preliminary Level. C-2s who are USEA qualified to compete at Preliminary level may apply for an exception through their RS but need to attend a qualifying rally. It is not necessary for Bs and above to attend a qualifying rally if they have two USEA qualifying affidavits from the last 11 months. These must be completed without elimination, and one must have no XC penalties and the other no more than 20 XC penalties.

Now is the time to start planning for this exciting once-in-a-lifetime International USPC team experience. The tentative itinerary for 2009 will likely include a visit to historic Dublin, as well as other cultural activities with an emphasis on horse sports, and meeting pony club members in Ireland who also event. Additionally there could well be opportunities to ride, to visit an Irish riding academy, breeding farm, and possibly the famous Dublin Horse Show.

Purpose

1. The purpose of an award of this nature is to reward the hard work, dedication and skill it has taken to achieve such a high level of accomplishment in the sport of Eventing. USPC National Championships is the perfect venue to showcase the value of team work, horse management and veterinary knowledge that USPC teaches and encourages its membership to practice. The level of training, conditioning and mutual trust and respect between horse and rider at the Preliminary level is the culmination of all that USPC teaches, producing worthy representatives and leaders.

2. A second purpose is to present an incentive for older, more experienced pony club members to continue to enter and compete in USPC Championship competitions to enhance the mentoring concept supported by this organization.

3. A third purpose is to provide an exciting goal for the lower-level pony club members to which to aspire, encouraging them to continue their efforts to advance in the sport of Eventing.

4. This type of prize is offered in the spirit of USPC mission statement "to develop in young riders strength of character, alert minds and sound bodies" by contributing to the development of young adults' awareness, sympathy and understanding of cultures different from their own around the world, and to furthering the pony club experience outside of the United States. By providing a horse-related fun and educational experience for Pony Club members, the recipients will benefit by making friends and learning about the people, customs and culture of the host country.

5. Finally, these young riders will be international ambassadors of USPC.

Itinerary

Vicki Brush, as a seated Member of the USPC Eventing Activities Committee, will spear-head the planning of the itinerary and activities of each annual award. The final plan will be reviewed and approved by the Eventing Chair, the Director of Activities as well as the International Exchange Committee due to its extensive history of international USPC exchanges, thereby greatly increasing the scope and success of the trip. This tentative itinerary will be finalized as soon as possible:

Monday August 3 Depart JFK International Airport

Tuesday Aug 4 Arrive Shannon Airport

Friday Aug 14 Depart Shannon

Note: Watch for updates as the schedule is firmed up.

Rachel Pemstein Memorial Award for

Horse Management in Eventing

Awarded at Championships

This award, donated by the family of Rachel Pemstein DVM, who was an avid Pony Club supporter who volunteered much of her time and veterinary expertise at rallies and championships.  The Rachel Pemstein award, an engraved Julep Cup, is awarded to the members of the high-scoring Horse Management  teams in each division at USPC Eventing Championships. Recipients are each awarded an engraved "keeper" trophy.

The Frank Bierman Challenge Cup

for Excellence in Eventing

Awarded at Championships

The Bierman Challenge cup is a perpetual trophy awarded annually to the Training Level Competitor at USPC Championships who demonstrates excellence in the Cross Country phase of Eventing with a mount that is properly fit and conditioned.

The Bierman Challenge cup was donated to USPC by Frank Bierman, Director of Show Operations for the Virginia Horse Center, long time pony club supporter and avid fox hunter.  Frank believes that the cross country phase of Eventing best demonstrates the skills of a well rounded horseman and most closely mirrors his beloved fox hunting, the activity that led to the establishment of the USPC.

The criteria for selection of the recipient is; The Training level rider who completes the cross country course with no jumping or time penalties, coming closest to the optimal time with no signs of a stressed mount and an acceptable recovery rate as indication of the mounts overall condition.  In the event of a tie, the best combined score of all three riding phases will be used, and if necessary the Formal Inspection score will be used to break a further tie.

The trophy is kept on display at the USPC headquarters with each annual recipient's name engraved on the Cup.  The recipient will receive an engraved Jefferson Cup.

Draft Cross Breeders and Owners Association

The Draft Cross Breeders and Owners Association are sponsoring an award for the top scoring DCBOA rider (riding a DCBOA registered horse) in the each level (Beginner Novice, Novice, Training and Preliminary) of Eventing at the Pony Club National Championships.  The award will be in the form of a trophy.

Horses and Riders must both be registered with the DCBOA prior to Championships.  Registration and Membership information may be found on the DCBOA website:   http://draftcrossbreedersandowners.com

Any questions should be directed to the Activities Services Director, Wayne Quarles,  Activities@ponyclub.org or Activities Assistant, Erin Woodall, erin@ponyclub.org  (859) 254-7669

The Trish Gilbert Award

Trish Gilbert, a USA Equestrian and FEI licensed Course Designer and TD as well as a lifetime supporter of Pony Club, has donated this award for Pony Club members.  This award is presented annually to the highest placing current USPC member competing in the North American Young Riders 2-Star, 3-Day Event competition. The winner receives a Julep Cup with the USPC emblem and their name is engraved on the perpetual trophy that lives at the National Office in Lexington, KY.   Past winners of the Trish Gilbert Award can be found on the News Page.

Cavalry Awards

Since 1989, the US Cavalry Association has sponsored a trophy awarded annually to the best scoring current Pony Club member in CCI events with Steeplechase, recognized by the USEF.

The trophy was presented to the USPC in recognition of the Pony Club's commitment to carry on the equestrian sport traditions of the US Cavalry and in honor of the many Cavalry officers who served the USPC with invaluable advice and guidance during it's formative years. As Eventing was originally a test of a cavalry officer's charger, the Cavalry award is for presented success in the traditional format of three day Eventing.

The trophy is a plaque at USPC headquarters on which are engraved the names of the winners. The individuals get a picture of the plaque in an engraved silver frame with the US Cavalry Assn. crest.

At the end of the 3-Day competition year, the Activities department receives from

USEA lists of the results for the five (5) CCI One Star 3 Day Events with Steeplechase, that take place in the US. This list is searched for all current USPC members that complete the competition. The best scoring current USPC member per Event receives the Calvary Award.

In Mid-November, a letter is sent notifying each recipient with copies to their RS and DC, along with information on the Annual meeting awards time and place. If the recipients are not able to attend the Awards ceremony, their award will be mailed to them.
